Summer and Fall

We’ve lived in our home for a year now. A major reason we picked this apartment is because of the view. If you want a vista here, you’ve got to be prepared to work for it! Being on one of the hills of Lisbon gets us a view across Avenida da Liberdade to Principe Real and the Botanical Garden of Lisbon. Every time we’re hoofing up the hill, we think ahhh but the view at the top will be worth it!

I took these two pictures when we were viewing the apartment. The small window with its view of the city. The green area under the cranes? That’s the Botanical Garden.

Of almost as much value to us is the view from the large window. It overlooks a garden belonging to an inn on a side street and boasts at least ten trees. It’s quite the urban forest! We are blessed to have a pretty active bird population enjoying it. There’s nothing like being able to listen to birds right in the middle of Lisbon.

I start every morning during summer by standing here with the windows open, saying hi to the world.

We don’t know who this chatty fellow is, but he sure sounds happy!

While we no longer walk in the main room and stop dead, struck by the vista, we have been delighted to discover that the changing seasons and time of day freshen the view.

The famed red tile roofs of Portugal. Here, the heat of August brought a nearby resident out to his tiny landing to enjoy the cooler air. The top floor of the older, uninsulated buildings can get really hot.

Blooming Pohutukawa and ornamental oranges. Other trees in this urban forest I’ve identified are: lemon tree, privet, Japanese pagoda tree, ornamental plum, and maple.

Looking directly down at the garden. At the top of the picture you’ll see one of the Airbnb’s. The outdoor patio seems popular, especially with the many Bros who have discovered the unit.

The city at night is possibly more beautiful

We discovered that we can see fireworks from our apartment. Here you’ll see the celebration when Sporting became the futebol champions of the Primeira Liga last year.

The fall brought more colorful sunsets and sunrises.

… and also the rainy season, bringing wind, water, and majestic clouds.

After the storm

I’ll leave with a sunrise - that’s something to wake up to each day!
