Love the views and the changing skies with each season. We were in the Alfama apartment on May 31/June 1. Just after midnight on June 1, a large parade of people came by … almost like a New Orleans brass band parade. I believe it was the kick-off to Saints’ Month. It was amazing and fun to experience.

We tend to call that space the Living Room if it’s people who know what our place looks like. Otherwise, we call it the living/dining room.

We were in Braga at some point before Easter and we got to see the parade/mass of faithfuil/saint being taken down the street. It was so fascinating.

I like it!

Beautiful pictures and views. Sala is a prettier way of saying gathering room or combination room. 🤔😁

Wonderful window! I can relate. Our screen porch has a view of woods, and flowers. No hint of being in the city. And…the picture of Josie has a fabulous surreal feeling. Perfect Beautiful.

Thank you!

My mom's house in CT had views down into the nature conservancy, and the other windows had the view of the fields. It was wonderful.

Gorgeous photos! And I am down for any soundclips you want to share. The church bells are lovely!

We fell in love with churchbells in Guanajuato, Mexico. If you ever have a chance, that's an amazing small city to visit.

Never been to Mexico - it's on the to-do list!

We did the altiplano - all these little colonial-era cities around Mexico City. It was a really awesome trip. We've never had such amazing airbnb hosts. One of them went out at midnight to get Scott crackers because he wasn't feeling well. Another cooked us dinner and brought us to a hidden underground mezcal bar. The third made us breakfast and we sat around talking. Amazing people.

In the Filipino language, we generally call the open area where there is non-dining seating options as "sala". ☺️

Lovely!! Sometimes I feel guilty for how much time I spend just looking from our windows and terraces and not doing anything more productive. But my friends remind me that striving for irrelevance is a virtue. 😎. Great post. Thank you.

I call that living life well! Is there anything more important?

What a lovely overview of life looking out your window! We arrived last year amid one coastal event after another, and our apartment facing right on the Atlantic. Sunsets in winter are spectacular, and we have hundreds of photos of them. We now live with a north-facing view of the Douro and look forward to experiencing fall and winter here compared to our previous apartment.

We call it the sitting room or the front room. You could call it Josie's Sitting Room. Love your views!

Love it! Josie's sitting room!!!

I really like front room. It faces the back of the building, but front room feels right. Thanks for the great idea!

Just beautiful, and ever changing. How do you get anything done? Of course if you leave the screenless windows open you will probably attract birds into the house. Josie looks blissful. And the word "sala" seems to work in Portugal, so I'd go with that.

Ha! Yes, there are times we are hijacked by the view!

Oooo sala! I like it! Thank you!!!

As if we needed another reason to love Portugal, these pictures are absolutely beautiful. And your window and view are stunning. So happy for you and thank you for sharing.

Suggestion: Just call it «a SALA» [ = «the living/sitting/gathering room», a free translation in English of the uses we give to the word «sala», as an opposite to «quarto», which means room, just intended to be the place where one sleeps].

This is definitely the number one answer - I think we'll be going with it!

Room nomenclature possibility: maybe the Portuguese word for living room/dining room, "sala" (SUHluh). What do you think?

Also: gotta love your windows. Parabéns, que linda!

Loving it!

We are so fortunate with the view - and the windows. I love how they open in like french doors, and they also open from the top so you have just a bit of air movement.

(I would pronounce it "saah-luh".)
