It is my belief that kitchens and appliances are designed by men who have never used either.

Ha! Amy says that about women's clothing, too.

She's correct!

Yet again, I got quite a chuckle out of reading one of your too relatable posts. I think the toaster saga might have been my first encounter with your blog, in fact.

I was going to suggest that if you have a table that seats 14 to 16 people, perhaps you are still not quite out of the recreate-here-what-we-had-there phase, but then I read the footnote about DnD and was like, "Ah yeah, that checks out." We have been debating whether we want to have our custom DnD table shipped from the U.S. or just have another one made here. (There's a game table manufacturer in Porto!)

In fact, thanks to having a group of friends over to introduce them to the joy of DnD last week, I can confirm that they do indeed have popcorn bags here, as one of our guests brought some. They are appropriately sized for the small microwaves here.

Probably best to abandon any hope of ever cooking a turkey here lol. Could you even buy a whole one here if you wanted to?

If you haven't seen it, may I suggest you check out my recent humorous post about an encounter with takeaway packaging? I feel like you folks would appreciate it.

A game table manufacturer in Porto you say? I probably shouldn't have this knowledge. There may be room for one more table in here...

Hahahah! I should say they are relatively close to Porto. I just looked at their location on a map and they are to the northeast a bit.

And now you go and give me the website? You are a dangerous person! 😆

*Three months later*

Oh what's that, Amy? I had no choice. It was presented to me. It was a Portuguese company, I was helping the economy. No, I've no idea where we'll put it. But doesn't it look good?

Bahahahah! Yes, just doing my part to help the economy here! 😈

Everything we’ve bought or are buying new is tiny! Except I’m insisting on an American frig. I need my ice!!!!!

Expand full comment

Yeah we're back to ice trays. They work but it's not the same.

Lol! Sounds like you’re having some size adjustments! We renovated an entire kitchen when someone uttered the phrase (me) “wouldn’t it be nice to have a dishwasher?” and then literally everything changed. Do you think most people eat out there and don’t need as much room in a kitchen?

Expand full comment

It's amazing how fast things can change isn't it?

I think there may be a lot going on with the sizes. In general, there may be more eating out. There may also be less of a tendency to prepare large amounts of food. And to shop more frequently, cooking for a meal at a time rather than freezing something to eat later like we used to in STL. And there may be a general tendency for things in the US to be larger. If I can be more general 😆.

Amy and Scott, you're not in Kansas (er, sorry, Missouri) anymore. But I have a suggestion. Ikea does kitchens, has it's own line. Why don't you go talk to them? Presumably they have the same things in Portugal as they do in the US. It would be the cheapest and most feasible way to go, I'm thinking.

No we definitely are not :-D. When/if it comes time to redo the kitchen, we may very well check out IKEA. Thanks for the suggestion!

HOW HAVE YOU NEVER USED YOUR DISHWASHER??? Having lived without one for the first time in my life for the last almost 4 years that is the thing that I will never ever ever take for granted again! Well, probably for 2 years at least.

When my parents renovated their kitchen when I was 4ish, they discovered that their kitchen was too small for most standard North American designs, so they ended up going with European cupboards and layout, and thus European sized appliances. I grew up with them and was used to it, but I now understand how tiny they are. While a (very small) turkey will fit in the oven, no roasters made in NA will, so my Mom has to improvise and use a different pan. The relatively new induction stove top has only three burners, one of which is quite large, one of which is tiny, and none of which work particularly well. I expect that their microwave is about the same size as yours as well, with very few things actually fitting into it.

I love the small footprint in practice, but have ultimately decided that bigger is better when it comes to the kitchen! I hope you're able to find ways to get baking again, and thank you for the cookie recipe suggestion which I will be stealing. Oatmeal raisin is my legit favourite!

We have four plates and three bowls (one broke a few months back). And since we aren't really cooking, even if we waited until we were completely out of dishes it wouldn't fill the machine. 😆

Our induction top works amazingly well. I'm actually amazed by it and hope to post some video at some point. I'm glad you will finally be able to have a larger kitchen situation in the new house.

And yes, do make those cookies; you will not regret it.

(Also, I find it hilarious that you have not yet gone to bed and I am just waking up.)

And we've been feeling sorry for ourselves because we moved into a house that has a half-normal-width dishwasher.

We looked at real estate last year and when we talked about the feasibility of removing a wall that segregated the kitchen from the main living area, the real estate agent was aghast! Why would you do that when there are so many restaurants and cafes just down the block??!!! We did not buy that apartment and it is still for sale - for 28% MORE than it was last March!!!! Investment. With very small appliances. Learning to Jenga the snapware shapes into the teenie fridge has become a sport for us. :-)

That's an interesting sales technique: nobody's buying it? Raise the price!

Tetris is not my strong suit. Perhaps I need a smaller fridge to practice with.

Yes, the kitchen needs a make over. 😁

Haha yes! But, we stretched to buy this place, soooo, maybe I will learn to live with it.
