Was that during Tropical Depression Bernard on Saturday and Sunday? It closed multiple hiking trails and levadas on Madeira indefinitely! It was not just a rain storm! But you and your umbrella weathered quite a storm! Nice new rain gear!

Don't know about your area, but at the Balhão Mercado no Porto, there is a guy who sharpens knives AND fixes umbrellas and for only a couple of euros (for either).

Great picture of the trash bin and typical of the season.

The trees are lovely, as long as they don't dance into your house. Glad you finally got to eat at the "closed" restaurant. Hopefully you are now properly dressed for the weather. I hate shopping for clothes with a passion, buy most things online and just took some new slacks to the alterations lady to be hemmed (properly, not amateurishly as they would be if I tried to do it). The umbrella thing, I don't know. They are often more nuisance than help. And what about poor Josie on her walks. Does she get soaked too?

This probably won't help because you probably can't get them easily, but for many years I've been very happy with the GustBusters line of wind-resistant umbrellas. I get the "Metro" model which is about 43" in diameter (109 cm). A few years ago they cost about $40 but I see the price is up to $55. I've LOST about three of them, but never had one blow out in wind. I don't know if everyone has figured out how to built vented umbrellas, but I did buy one non-Gustbusters umbrella that failed immediately in a not-very-strong wind.
