After 40 years in my house, I decided to take one more stab at rearranging furniture in my problem room. The trick was to draw a sketch to scale, along with the separate furniture items and play with them to my heart’s content. For the first time in 40 years I have an arrangement I actually like.
Boy! Decisions, Decisions! But sounds like you are getting there! Lots of FUN??!! Really glad you are settling in and to enjoy your View!! Happy Spring!
Oh, and we've had those pull out hanger things - two different types with two different abilities to actually hold the clothes. I broke one type, oops. Yours looks sturdier though.
I love your views! I love to sit and face the view that we have. A cozy chair and a book looking out over the pond behind our house is such a peaceful spot for me. And that pair of cozy chairs took us a long time to find and even longer to be delivered, but it was worth it! Good luck finding what works for you!
I work in engineering so have access to drawing software like AutoCAD, Visio, etc but I find that measuring the space, drawing the layout and identifying the anchor points like doors, windows, immoveable items on graphing/grid paper is a good place to start. In the end, more leftover space that allows for smooth and unencumbered "man and material" movement is advisable. Good luck! This is a task I personally would enjoy doing, haha.
blocklayer rocks for me for creating my own graph paper. the first challenge was getting the printer to work with no wifi. then finding the cables. it's been fun. i love doing it for a landscape. inside.... that's not my space. i'm using stacked moving boxes to visual chairs and whatnot. we've got plenty of those!
Well, seems like Nancy (below) can help you. My only suggestion is, put a cafe table and chairs in front of the kitchen window if those will fit. And doesn't Ikea have small, movable ((on wheels) kitchen islands/storage cabinets? I know I have seen those somewhere. I'd have to really see the rest of the room to figure out the space. Bookshelves under the Lisbon view window?
Congratulations on the move. We, too, are amazed what won't ship to Portugal - and to make matters worse, we are on Madeira! Even less than Lisbon. Good luck to you - enjoy the new place!
Pretty much anything can ship to Portugal. If the shipment originates from outside the EU, there's a good chance you'll be asked to pay customs costs (which are unpredictable and, seemingly, unrelated to what's actually being shipped) on top of whatever cost, tax, and shipping the original purchase goes for. Some shippers choose not to deal with the hassles of the paperwork and the surprise costs to their customers by deciding not to ship to the EU at all. The best thing, then, is to look for an item being sold from within the EU. Given that we came from the US, we're used to certain products and brands that simply aren't available within the EU. In most cases, there are equivalents if we look hard enough.
Hello Natasha and welcome aboard! Thanks for following along.
We did not ship belongings here, no. We condensed our possessions (well, excluding our dog, who isn't really a "possession" in the same way) down to six 50-lb duffel bags and four carry-ons and took it all to the airport when we flew over.
If you are asking whether there are restrictions on bringing items over in some sort of shipping container, I imagine both that there are some and that they are unlikely to be either surprising or onerous for most people. (Like, you know, don't ship anything that might explode. Or emit toxic gases. Or be illegal to import to Portugal.) I suspect that a place like UpakWeShip would pretty much have to up on those rules - it's their business.

Just like I do in the garden!
Your views are wonderful.
I have no advice about how to arrange the furniture and look forward to seeing what you decide.

Thanks, Aunt Peggy!

Really good to know. They are a little over my head and very hard to pull out. I will be gentle and be careful of my angle of pull.

Exactly! I've seen so many examples where they face the furniture away from the view!
In our space there is a fireplace which is the way the furniture would naturally face, but instead I wanted it facing the view, so we made it work!

I really like the cafe table and chairs.....

I bet you have an awesome/sad list of things you can't get there!
I have helped several friends with small or odd shaped rooms furnish their apts. email me the dimensions/drawing and I will give it a shot
Wait, let's talk about what won't ship to Portugal some more?

Thanks for responding, Scott! I'm new here so I'm not sure if you touched on this but did you ship any of your furniture/belongings when you moved?
