Well, you are learning patience, for sure, and how to follow directions. I hope you get your licenses sooner rather than later.

Thanks, Aunt Phyllis! I suspect it will be close to or past the six month mark before they arrive.

I’ve had to do the same, apparently my card was issued (six months after), but...didn’t get me home yet so I’m still with the lousy paper that by the way is NOT valid abroad nor valid for renting a car 🫠

Yeah, our clerk made it clear that the paper would not be accepted outside of Portugal.

We've read of people who have plans to visit the US soon and have emailed back and forth with rental car companies to see if they would accept the temporary paper driver license. They reported that the company representative said it was OK to use the paper ID. They are printing that email to take with them in the event they are told at the rental counter that their license is no good. We'll see what happens when they actually get there. I imagine supervisors will need to get involved :-D.

I hope yours arrives soon! Did you renew your temporary paper ID? If so, how did that process go for you?

I keep my fingers crossed for you…and for me!

The process was easier for me, as an EU citizen I didn’t have to do much more than just hand in the old license to exchange for the new one. I did so because mine expired :) so I needed a replacement. Still, I was surprised it takes soooooo long, last time I I updated mine it took 10 min, but I guess it is a more cumbersome process to handle foreign ones.

The silly thing is that I got a mail stating my license is ready only after I sent in an enquiry to the officer who handled my case (I had their mail). But still no proof!

How long ago did they tell you your license was ready? I hope you see it today! (I don't even know: is there mail delivery on Saturday in Portugal? Or if it's not here today does that mean it won't arrive til Monday at the earliest?)

This week, I was fed up with waiting so I wrote them. I also hope it will come in sooner than later! I DESPISe the flimsy piece of paper now!

My US driver license has a few years left, however, I am over 60, which is one of the exceptions you mention in the article. So, I needed to renew. Got all of the notarized, Apostilled documents, and went to a doctor for the IMI medical. I ended up taking a test requiring quick responses to a bunch of screen prompts using a joystick and pedal. Anyway, I passed whatever that was, and the doctor signed off on the paperwork. My lawyer sent everything off to the Portuguese "DMV" in August. In September 2023, we received a message that everything was received. We haven't heard anything since. No idea what to do other than wait.
