Sooooo not to be a buzzkill but generative AI is a minefield of different... bads. It takes a ton of energy in proportion to what's being asked of it, it wastes fresh water, they were all trained entirely unethically on bodies of art that the artists got no compensation and gave no permission for, and it contributes to artists not getting further work, too, and the devaluation of artists in general. Not everyone knows this! But I am sharing in case you/anyone else was unaware. (:

Thanks, Izzy. I did at one point know that more than I remembered a couple of weeks ago when I started messing around with the site I used. I appreciate very much your reminder. Thank you for being someone I aspire to emulate.

I admit that I am in a bubble online but it was jarring to see the use of AI. I am glad that Izzy was able to gently bring to light why it's something that's better not used.

Message received and understood, thank you.

Hi, Scott! Thanks for your thoughtful and detailed description of the making of your new production, Eurydice. As a former theater geek, I was so inspired by your story that i bought tickets for Saturday, March 14! This will be the first live theatre production that my husband and I have attended since moving to Portugal 2+ years ago. Thank you for bringing us back into the theatre!! We can't wait!

Wow, Ann, thanks for the kind words! I hope you enjoy the performance on the 14th. I don't know if I'll have a chance to get out into the foyer before and/or after the show but I'll keep my eyes open for you if I can do so.

I hope to meet you and congratulate you in person, Scott!

We should talk some time about the MICDS production I directed. I think it was my favorite thing I did here in 35 years. Take and leave the stage directions until the ones that fit your show reveal themselves, and let the actors populate the rest of the stage with their imaginations. The magic is how the "follies" that are manifested by the actors' imaginations become a shared delusion with the audience.

Hey Patrick! So nice to hear from you! I've shared your comment with Madison. Thanks for that and thank you also for being so encouraging of me when I was interested in getting into theater in STL. I wouldn't be where I am right now if it wasn't for your support.

It's very interesting to hear about the whole process - thank you for sharing. I wish we were there to experience it - sounds like something to see (creating most of the atmosphere inside the viewers' mind's eye) and to hear!

Thanks, Keri.

Good luck with the show, Scott - or break a leg, if you prefer. I am intrigued by this modern staging of the ancient tragedy. Sounds like a cool and compelling production. I hope it is SRO for all of the performances! Boa sorte! All the best from snowbound Boston - Pax!

Urian is a ray of sunshine! I’m glad you’re coming to see him perform. I’m excited for his upcoming new look as well.

Do the Lisbon Players have auditions for actors? Theatre professionals here retired in Coimbra!

Scott H-K's avatar

They do, yes! I described the audition process for Eurydice in detail in this post. The 125+ people I mentioned had all responded to an open casting call. We actually had an actor come in from Coimbra to audition. Feel free to message me privately if you'd like to learn more.

A trillion euros. That's a heck of thing to bury at the end of this. How have you fared?

Good luck with the production! It sounds amazing!

I have been/am working on a piece about the weather but time has been in short supply of late for a variety of reasons and this piece jumped the line as the days wore on. We're fine, thanks. Lisbon as a whole seemed to come out ok. Parts of Coimbra and other places along both the coast and interior did not fare as well.
