Easter in Portugal: A Quickie
The shocking truth of Easter goodies
Happy Easter, everyone!
I found myself in the one of our larger grocery stores recently, and saw an Easter candy display in the middle of a main aisle. A bunch of ready-made Easter baskets, ready to go.
Or so I thought. When I got closer I realizes they weren’t baskets at all, but some kind of pouches with candy with K-Pop Demon Hunters on the bag. It’s not even an assortment of candy - just one kind. That’s different, I thought.
So when I rounded the corner and saw the mother-lode, I did a little explore.
It’s difficult to express how very large this section was. I had a hard time seeing the entirety from one location. Large table-height displays of candies surrounded by shelving with more candies.
But, not a single Easter basket.
Or, fake grass.
This was … alarming? Weird? Or, just one of the differences of living in Portugal.
Just in case you need to be prepared, there also were NO
Mini eggs
Creme eggs
PEEPS
or even…. Jelly beans!
Strange world this. How the Portuguese miss out. Or, do they?
That’s all for now,
Love from Lisbon,
Amy
Today’s weather
I hope your Easter weather is as beautiful as ours - 80f/26c, with blue skies.
That warmth certainly helped the church to be less cold. Technically our church is heated. There are warm tubes under some of the pews. But unless you press your leg up against it, you don’t feel any warmth. The heat from the space heaters scattered in the aisles just goes to the tall ceiling. They do have blankets (thin ones from IKEA (not eye-key-a but ick e a), and no one takes their coat off. When we first started attending, we were shocked how cold the church is. Europeans were not. Apparently this is fairly typical. The Americans have learned to show up with a variety of warming gadgets like heated vests and recharagable heated bags.

Amy, the Portuguese in no way lose out. It’s true that the Portuguese treat Easter less as a commercial holiday and more as a religious; we spent Holy Thusday through Easter in Braga this yeao oi
