Art is everywhere: Cobblestones

Cobblestone art is everywhere in Lisbon. It’s one of the first things we noticed here.

(Unless otherwise indicated, all photos in this - and every other - post are taken by one or the other of us.)

Designs can:

• stretch on for a block or more.

• be relatively simple

• or quite intricate

• be colorful

• occasionally even be tricksy and false

Don’t be fooled by this one. This isn’t art with cobblestones. This is someone painting a design onto existing stones. Indicators: the design is fading and worn and it doesn’t go to the edge of each cobble. “Authentic” designs are done with black cobblestones that stay black when worn down.

• aim to inform

Bet you can’t tell what’s sold inside this shop.

• be repetitive

• take on a seemingly endless variety of shapes and forms

  

  This one is outside a house museum dedicated to a famous Fado singer, Amália Rodrigues. We’ll likely report on Fado at some point in the future.

We haven’t seen in person some of the more impressive designs. We know they’re out there. Expect another in the “Cobblestone” series at some point.
